You have created a web page. Wonderful. :^) Now we need to address the file name, page title and the meta tags.

First a couple of Don'ts:
  1. DO NOT Use comment tags to boast key work count. Search engines ignore comment tags. You are:
    • Wasting your time.
    • Adding unnecessary code to the web page.
  2. DO NOT put keyword on the web page the same color as the background. This is a very, very old trick that will actually cost you ranking in a search engine. Why? Because it is considered SPAMing the search engine. SPAMing the search engine is inflating your ranking by tricking the search engine into thinking your page has more value than it actually has. Sort of like getting and e-mail with a bogus subject line meant to make you think the amyl is of value when it is garbage. Search engine algorithms are written to punish Webmasters that do this, since it is believed that if a website has value stunts like this are not needed.
    • Wasting your time.
    • Adding unnecessary code to the web page.
    • Lowers your ranking in the search engine.
Now the Dos:
File Names, Page Titles, and Alt Tags:
  1. File name should have your key words in it. Short is good but, do not punish yourself by being cryptic with the file name. Search engines do look at file names as an indication of content. The file name of this page is meta_tag_myths.shtml:
    • all lower case.
    • There is a _ (underscore between words) a spider sees metatagmyths a misspelled word but counts the underscore as a space.
    • NEVER EVER EVER put spaces between words in a file name. "meta tag myths.shtml" may be valid to Microsoft but it will screw up the spider.
  2. Page titles can have up to 255 characters. Why? A text field in a database is 255 characters. When creating page titles :
    • all lower case.
    • Use spaces and do not repeat words, you can add , (commas) between word groups but it is not necessary.
    • USE ALL the space this is prime time real-estate.
  3. Alt Tags:
    • all lower case.
    • Use no spaces and do not repeat words, you can add , (commas) between word groups but it is not necessary.
    • How big should the alt tag be is not an issue since the alt tag is not stored in a search engine database. My advice is use the alt tag and use it as it is meant to be used, but do not forget to throw in a key word or two.
Before I start in on Meta tags lets dispense with the mythology and why it exists. At one time, back when all Webmasters were totally honest, Meta tags had a lot more importance, search engines have found, (believe it or not) that Webmasters have started loading meta tags with irrelevant search terms that have nothing to do with the web page. I fully realize you would never do this, but trust me, not every one is as ultimately honest as you are. Meta tags are relevant but not as important as the word that the spider finds that appear to the surfer on the web page.
  1. <meta name="keywords" content="Fred red bed"> The content can be up to 255 characters and should be as close to 255 as possible.:
    • All lower case.
    • Use spaces and do not repeat words, you can add , (commas) between word groups but it is not necessary.
    • USE ALL the space this is prime time real-estate.
  2. <meta name="description" content="Very cool place">:
    • all lower case.
    • USE ALL the space this is prime time real-estate.
    • If possible hire a technical write for this task. This is what some search engines use as the description to your website when it appears on the index page and the description for a page when it is indexed individual.
